CURRENT STATUS
The Romanian registration number was ordered from “Speedsticker.ro”. The appearance and quality of the numbers and letters were good, however after application it became apparent that one of the numbers had failed to transfer to the boat. An attempt will be made to remove this from the backing and apply it seperately in place by hand.
This particular vessel is a classic yacht built in 1997 to extremely high standards, as such, the model is prized by collectors and valued at around 40,000 Euros. However, some areas have suffered with age. In particular, the fresh-water taps and delivery pump have calcified to a halt. The pump has been replaced and the Heads tap had its aerartor removed for de-calcification. The kitchen tap was more seriously blocked and had to be removed, however it was possible to clear the interior by connecting to a high pressure mains tap. On replacement, the entire system was flushed, until both hot and cold water systems ran clear.
The engines and outdrives have been removed.
We waited for a temperature of 15% Centigrade so that the two out-drive holes and drain-plug hole, could be sealed up inside and out with GRP.
The boat is now registered and has two electric outboards fitted.
Steering by two motors
It was proposed that two motors would provide steering, without the need to connect to a wheel.
One problem that emerged is that both motors (and probably all electric motors!) rotate in the same direction.
If we were able to fit counter rotating propellers, there would be no problem with “prop walk”,.
It was found that by slightly angling each motor towards the other, steering was easily achieved, without noticeable interference of the rotational kick – “prop walk”
Projected Speed.
This is based on hull speed, which is explained below. The boat is 8 metres long, between 26 and 27 feet.

The raw power available with the two Caroute motors combined, is 4KW = 5.36 Horsepower.
Because of superior efficiency in conversion of Kilowatts to Thrust, each motor is equal to 6 hp, but the propellers will limit the speed to 10-12 kilometres per hour. This leaves unused thrust in reserve to combat cross-winds when they occur.

NAVMAN 7100 ships radio
The Navman brand is no longer. In mid-March 2008 Navico, the Navman parent company, stopped marketing the Navman brand name. Many products will still be available worldwide under the Northstar brand.

This particular radio will now be marketed exclusively as the Northstar Explorer 710.
Performance
In performance testing, the 7100 transmitter frequency stability was rated good while receiver sensitivity got an excellent rating. Receiver selectivity is specified by Navman at greater than 65 dB, thats a little lower than average for VHF radios in this price range. Audio output was measured at 90 dBA, about average.
Operation
Manual channel selection is accomplished with up/down pushbuttons, while off/on/volume and squelch are controlled with a pair of knobs on the left side of the radio face. Several dedicated pushbuttons provide quick 16/9 channel selection, weather channel selection, a favorite three channel toggle, scan, UIC selection, and access to the menu.
Digital Selective Calling
DSC capabilities on this Navman VHF radio are wide-ranging, though not the best in class. It has the ability to make distress, individual, all ships, group, position request, position send, and geographical calls.
Odds and Ends
The 7100 features Dual, Tri Watch, or all channel scan. Selecting the menu allows the input of up to 20 names in a DSC call buddy list, local/distance receive sensitivity selection, and control of display backlighting.
The compact display on the 7100 earned a good rating from our testers because it shows much useful information simultaneously on screen. The only downside is that some of the data displayed uses very small letters that can require you to get within a foot or two of the radio to read. Icons for high/low transmitter power, local/distant receive, transmit/receive, and alpha channels are all displayed.
